The Song of the Seas: Ulysses and the Sirens, 1900
The current location of many of the pictures that de Glehn exhibited at the New Gallery remains unknown and it is only possible to ascertain their appearance with any certainty in a very few cases. In 1898 Wilfrid exhibited a painting with the poetic title, What Songs the Mermaids Whisper to the Gulls, And Bid them Speed their way to Distant Seas, while in 1900 he exhibited The Song of the Sea, Ulysses and the Sirens. While Wilfrid seems to have drawn his inspiration for these works from poetic sources and his own imagination, much in line with his teacher’s advice, Moreau’s influence on de Glehn does not seem to have extended itself in terms of handling of paint or use of colour. Nonetheless, Wilfrid’s mythological paintings would continue to be peopled by the femmes fatales and tragic heroines of classical literature so beloved by his teacher Moreau.
