Wilfrid painting in the grounds of the Manor House, Stratford Tony
Amusingly, one of the chief attractions for Wilfrid was that a small trout stream, The Ebble, ran along the edge of the garden. He was to spend much of the nine years prior to his death either painting in the studio he had built in the grounds of the Manor House or working outside directly from the landscape.
Wilfrid’s deteriorating health made it increasingly difficult for him to travel in the years following the Second World War, but guests were still welcome at their home. The photographer Cecil Beaton was a neighbour and often came to to read to Wilfrid when he was ill, on one afternoon even bringing Greta Garbo with him across the fields.
